Flaming Drink from It's a Wonderful Life | How to Drink: In the 1947 Frank Capra Christmas Classic Clarence orders a Flaming Rum Punch, but he never gets it, but what if he did? What drink would it be?
Flaming Rum Punch sort of tells us everything we need to know about this drink, it’s a rum punch and it’s on fire. If you take the word “Punch” literally it has a fairly specific meaning (similar to the way “Cocktail” means Bitters, Spirit, Sugar, Water) Punch means Spirit, Oleo Saccharum, Nutmeg, Water. Certainly you can embellish beyond that, but to the mind of the 1700’s bar patron anything less than this will not be punch. Since we know Clarence is a few hundred years old, this seems to be what he’s looking for here.
It’s a Wonderful Life is actually a tremendously great movie. I know it’s somewhat cynically the subject of scorn these days, but having rewatched it in preparation for this episode I was blown away by how perfect it really is. Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed are of course perfect in it but every supporting member of the cast couldn’t be better. This movie really affected me.
